The Legends Of Lithuanian Sport / Lithuania

Sport in Lithuania is one of the favorite leisure activities. Although our Motherland is very small we have got lots of famous athletes we can be proud of. Basketball is extremely important for each sports fan. It is often called the second religion in Lithuania and it is also Number 1 sport in Lithuania by the number of medals won at Summer Olympic Games. However, we are very pleased to have significant achievements in other branches of sports as well.


BASKETBALL


ARVYDAS SABONIS -is a professional Lithuanian basketball player, a world and olympic Champion.Since the 24 October 2011, Sabonis has been the president of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation.
DISCUS THROW

VIRGILIJUS ALEKNA  is a Lithuanian athlete who specializes in the discus throw. He won medals at the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympics, including two golds.



THE STRONGEST MAN IN THE WORLD

ŽYDRŪNAS SAVICKAS  is titled as the strongest all-time man. Six times in a row he won the title of the strongest man on earth in the most prestigious contest “Arnold‘s Strongest Man“.



TENNIS

RIČARDAS BERANKIS  is a Lithuanian professional tennis player and a prominent member of Lithuania Davis Cup team. He is the first Lithuanian to enter ATP top 100 and the highest ranked Lithuanian tennis player of all time.

CYCLING

SIMONA KRUPECKAITĖ  is a Lithuanian professional track cyclist. She is the 2009 500 m Time Trial World Champion, the World Record holder, and the 2010 Keirin World Champion.
She also won the 2009 Lithuanian Sportsman of the Year award.
In 2010 Krupeckaitė reached one more world record.


PENTATHLON

EDVINAS KRUNGOLCAS  is a Lithuanian modern pentathlete who won the silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.

HEPTATHLON AND DECATHLON

AUSTRA SKUJYTE is a Lithuanian athlete, competing in both the heptathlon and the decathlon. On 15 April 2005 in Columbia, Missouri, she broke the women's decathlon world record, with a score of 8366.
Her personal best in the 7-event heptathlon of 6435 was set on 21 August at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, where she won the Olympic silver medal.

RACING
KAZIMIERAS  VASILIAUSKAS-the first driver, competing at international open-wheel racing level.


SHOOTING
DAINA GUDZINEVICIUTE - Olympic gold medalist in shooting(2000).
